Ojukwu’s Vision: The Rise and Fall of Biafra
The story of Biafra and its short but consequential life as a secessionist state in southeastern Nigeria is a tragic one. It is a tale of hope, resilience, betrayal, and heartbreak, with one man at the heart of it all: Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. Ojukwu's vision of Biafra as an independent state was born out of the chaos and bloodshed of Nigeria's post-independence struggles, driven by the notion of self-determination for the Igbo people and other ethnic groups in southeastern Nigeria. In this oral history, we hear the voices of those who lived through this period — the soldiers, civilians, political leaders, and those who witnessed the rise and fall of Biafra — as they recount the defining moments of a nation that was never meant to be.
